The Notary Network
Most notaries are skilled at providing services to mortgage and title companies, attorneys, medical professionals and others. However, the real challenge lies in regularly generating new business and knowing where to look for leads in the local community and beyond. These are some approaches I have found success with, to keep my notary network and business growing.
Be ready for opportunities
Notaries should never limit themselves in their daily scope of duties. If you enjoy talking to people and helping others, then you should always have a handy stash of business cards at the ready. Carry business cards and pass them out whenever you have the opportunity. It might look like you are running for office, but a friendly smile and a business card will serve you well in growing your notary network.
You never know when someone may eventually need your services. It could be tomorrow, next month or way down the road. But they will remember you by your friendly introduction and could very likely pull out your business card when the opportunity presents itself.
Here is a great read-on from Forbes magazine on how to network.
Be an active listener
You’d be amazed at how much you can learn by simply listening to others. Your listening skills will help tremendously because you can gauge what someone is asking for or needing by simply listening.
Avoid dominating the conversation or constantly steering the topic back to yourself. You may be bursting at the seams with thoughts and ideas, but avoid interrupting when you don’t have the floor. It’s not uncommon for people to feel compelled to take charge of a conversation, rather than stepping back and allowing others to participate.
If you are half-listening while you look around the room for the next person you want to meet, you are missing an opportunity. Be present by providing your full attention. From maintaining eye contact to positioning yourself to face them, your body language exhibits that you are interested and engaged. Plus, when you listen to someone, it makes them feel appreciated and leaves a positive impression.
Connect with local notary groups
Don’t assume you know everything. In fact, it’s best to assume you know very little. There are many notaries that have years and years of experience in the industry. The more experienced notaries you network with, the more information, guidance and support you will receive from others. Attend local networking groups, and notary forums, speak directly with fellow notaries and stay connected through social media. Ask questions, gather feedback and then you can begin to build your business by using your own interpersonal skills to share your knowledge with others.
Ask for referrals and testimonials
Both of these items are essential to the success of a notary’s business. You should have a system in place that you follow after every signing. Send a thank you email, or better yet, a thank you card! In sincerely thanking your clients for using your services, make sure you are gently reminding them that any referrals would be greatly appreciated.
Take this opportunity to list all your services so they have a broad scope of all you offer. And if you want someone to provide a testimonial, you need to make it easy for them to do so. Provide clear instructions and a link where they can write it. The easier you make it for them, the more likely they are to leave a review.
Consistency creates opportunities
Consistently following the recommendations above will really help you to have a successful mobile notary business. Additionally, always remember the basics of good business practices, professional attire, a friendly attitude, and the genuine willingness to help others. Clients will remember the positive impression you made and will call you again and again.
